limiting the number of children in your home

Our Massachusettes Recruitment Response Team provided the following information: It is the MA state foster care and adoption policy that a family may have up to six children residing in their home at any given time, including birth children, adoptive children, relatives' children, foster children, and children in day care in the home. For an interstate adoption, the family can get a private agency homestudy and - if accepted by the other state - could adopt from another state. There is also a waiver process that can be undertaken, but it typically is used for such things as to allow another sibling to be placed with a family who has the maximum number of children in their home.

You can talk directly with our AdoptUsKids staff by calling 1-888-200-4005 or you can register online at info@adoptuskids.org.

Hi We were registered on Adoptuskids, but they took us off because we have adopted 6 children from foster care.

Are you sure it was Adoptuskids that took you off? Call them or email them and ask, because there are lots of families with more than 6 children still available to adopt. It may have been that your agency contacted them to remove your profile based in the criteia in your state, especially of you are with a public agency. I would make a few calls to find out.

Hi. Do you mean that if we get a private home study done and go the interstate compact way we could adopt again even if we have 6 adopted childrenin our home? This would be great news for us!

We have 5 adopted kids and just got turned down. I don't understand. Our house is more peaceful than some houses with 2 kids. Not to mention, these kids need homes and we still have lots of room!!

I don't beleive it is fair to limit a family to 6 children! As long as they are a healthy, functional family, it is not fair to waiting children to not allow them to adopt more.

Hi. we were removed from Adoptuskids because in our state of Massaachusetts we can not have more than 6 children in our home. Our home is "closed" but we still have our license. We wanted to know if we went to a private agency to get a private homestudy could we than adopt out of state even if we have 6 children in our home. We would love to have another daughter. There are so many children out there to be adopted.

I am not in Massachusetts, so maybe your state is different. However, I would call your states ICPC office, and find out the answer to that question. I have 7 adopted children( out of state) through a private agency and am in the process of planning to go meet my new children. Call and find out !!!

Also call around to private agencies and ask them your question. Also ask how much your study will cost or if they get their fee from the placing state. Some states cover the cost of the study as well as purchase of service. If a state does not pay for these, you will have to pay, but it is almaost always reimbursed at finalization under non-recurring expenses, as are the travel costs to visit the child.

Make some calls...I WOULD.

HI... Today we got word that we can adopt outside of Massachusetts..We just need to get a home study from a private agency.
We are happy..I want to say that we love and enjoy being parents to our 6 adopted children. Adoption is a personal journey. You have to be strong for your self, your family and the child you are considering adopting. This is not a easy journey you are about to take. The children can come with a lot of "baggage". They need love, guidance, nurturing, support, and understanding. If you can give them this, you will be rewarded with their love. WE have adopted 5 children from Massachusetts and 1 little girl from New York.It is a rollercoaster ride for sure. Don't give up on your dream to adopt!

I really do think it is sad that some states feel there is a "magic" number of children. We have 8 children so far adopted and are a happy and healthy family. We still feel we can/would provide a home for more children and think it is sad that we cannot be considered in some states simply due to our size. With a family who has already been there done that you have a family who is experienced and much less likely to disrupt with those harder kiddos. I think size should be taken as a strength...after all if you are still looking after you have reached that size you must be doing okay!
